How to Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer Desk

Written By Autera Health Center on April 2, 2021

Prevent Neck PainYour neck, also referred to as the cervical spine, supports the weight of your head and is responsible for your ability to move your head in nearly every direction. This intricate part of your body contains seven small vertebrae that help provide that flexibility—but this also makes it susceptible to injury and acute and chronic pain.

Neck pain is common for those who spend a lot of time at a computer desk due to poor computer posture, problems with the workstation, and lack of movement throughout the day. Fortunately, there are several ways that you can prevent neck pain while working at your desk.

4 Ways to Prevent Neck Pain While Working at Your Desk

Here are four simple ways to prevent neck pain while working at your desk.

1. Be Mindful of Your Computer Posture

Proper body alignment helps prevent injuries and pain. Poor computer posture is a common cause of neck strains and muscle aches. When sitting at your computer desk, avoid slouching, keep your back straight, and ensure your feet are flat on the floor. Check to make sure you’re using an office chair that allows you to maintain your spine's normal curve.

2. Double-Check Your Monitor Positioning

If your monitor is too high or too low, your neck must maintain an awkward position to view your screen, putting you at a higher risk of a neck strain. Adjust your monitor's positioning so that your eyes are level with the top of your computer screen.

3. Verify the Positions of Your Frequently Used Tools

Minimize how often you need to reach by optimizing the position of your frequently used tools, such as your mouse, keyboard, headset, and so on. The tools that you use throughout the day should be easily accessible without having to learn forward.

4. Take Breaks and Allow Time to Stretch

Lack of movement can cause lead to injury and cause back or neck pain. Take a break at least once every half an hour to allow some movement. Stand up and stretch or take a short walk.
