The symptoms of sciatica can affect your life significantly, making it difficult to work, exercise, take part in hobbies, and sleep. If sciatica symptoms are making it hard to enjoy everyday life, our Peachtree chiropractors may recommend spinal decompression therapy. Discover how this treatment can help with sciatica.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a safe, non-invasive chiropractic treatment method. The treatment utilizes a traction table to slowly and gently stretch the spine, so that vertebrae and discs shift back into alignment. Our chiropractors will use a computer to map out how and when the traction table moves in order to target your specific treatment area and symptoms.

What to Expect from Spinal Decompression Therapy

When you visit our chiropractors for spinal decompression for sciatica, you will lie fully clothed on a padded table. You may be asked to place your calves and feet on an elevated platform at the end of the table. Our chiropractors or chiropractic assistants will use a harness to safely immobilize you on the table. They will then use a computer to begin the spinal decompression program. You will be able to feel your spine stretching but won’t experience any pain or discomfort. Each session lasts around 35 to 45 minutes, and you can immediately resume your normal daily activities afterwards. You may need around 20 treatments over a four-week period to see the best results.

How Spinal Decompression Relieves Sciatica Symptoms

As the traction table used in spinal decompression moves your spine back into alignment, it relieves pressure on the sciatic nerve. This can significantly reduce or eliminate many symptoms of sciatica, including pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness.

Who Should Not Undergo Spinal Decompression

You should not undergo spinal decompression if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You’ve undergone spinal fusion
  • You have spinal stenosis
  • You have any kind of spinal implant or artificial disc
